I switched to a self-hosted site for the Renew Your Mind – Q&A program and will no longer be using this site.

This WordPress site does not let me list posts chronologically. This make it cumbersome for a newcomer to access the first posts from Genesis. I am also not getting the desired search results.

http://rym.johnkodiyil.com/ is the new home. The design is simple. There is a subscribe button as before.

If you have received an email from me about 10 minutes ago with the subject “Renew Your Mind – Q&A” from the new site, then you are already part of the program and do not need to subscribe again.

With love in Jesus.

Glory of the Lord

Exodus 40:34 Then the cloud covered the Tabernacle, and the glory of the LORD filled the Tabernacle.35 Moses could no longer enter the Tabernacle because the cloud had settled down over it, and the glory of the LORD filled the Tabernacle.
Pastor, what the Glory of the Lord refers to? and why Moses could not enter anymore into the tabernacle?

The cloud (the symbol of the visible presence of God) and the glory of God filled the tabernacle when all things were completed, anointed, sanctified, and made holy for divine services and the Divine Presence. Moses could not enter the tabernacle for such overwhelming glory (Ex. 40:35). A similar glory appeared when Solomon finished the temple (1Ki. 8:10-11). About 650 years of blessings and curses were experienced by the nation between these two events.

Glory(Heb. kabhod; Gr. doxa).

  1. Abundance, wealth, treasure, and hence honour (Ps 49:12); glory (Gen 31:1; Mat 4:8; Rev 21:24, 26).
  2. Honour, dignity (1Ki 3:13; Heb 2:7; 1Pe 1:24); of God (Ps 19:1; Ps 29:1); of the mind or heart (Gen 49:6; Ps 7:5; Acts 2:46).
  3. Splendour, brightness, majesty (Gen 45:13; Isa 4:5; Acts 22:11; 2Co 3:7); of Jehovah (Isa 59:19; Isa 60:1; 2Th 1:9).
  4. The glorious moral attributes, the infinite perfections of God (Isa 40:5; Acts 7:2; Rom 1:23; Rom 9:23; Eph 1:12). Jesus is the “brightness of the Father’s glory” (Heb 1:3; John 1:14; John 2:11).
  5. The bliss of heaven (Rom 2:7, 10; Rom 5:2; Rom 8:18; Heb 2:10; 1Pe 5:1, 10).
  6. The phrase “Give glory to God” (Jos 7:19; Jer 13:16) is a Hebrew idiom meaning, “Confess your sins.” The words of the Jews to the blind man, “Give God the praise” (John 9:24), are an adjuration to confess.

They are equivalent to, “Confess that you are an impostor,” “Give God the glory by speaking the truth;” for they denied that a miracle had been wrought.

The Glory of the Lord
“Glory” here comes from the Hebrew: kabowd (OT:3519), “splendor, honor, glory.”  This word is used in fourteen different ways:

  1. Material substance (Genesis 31:1; Psalm 49:16-17)
  2. Authority and power (Genesis 45:13; Esther 5:11; Job 19:9; Job 29:20; Psalm 4:2; Psalm 8:1,5)
  3. Visible manifestation of God (Exodus 16:7,10; Exodus 24:16-17; Exodus 40:34; Leviticus 9:6,23; Numbers 14:10,21-22; Numbers 16:19,42; Numbers 20:6; 1 Samuel 4:21-22; 1 Kings 8:11; 2 Chron. 5:14; 2 Chron. 7:1-3; Psalm 19:1; Psalm 72:19; Psalm 85:9; Psalm 97:6; Psalm 102:16; Ezekiel 1:28; Ezekiel 3:12,23; Ezekiel 8:4; Ezekiel 9:3; Ezekiel 10:4,18-19; Ezekiel 11:22-23; Ezekiel 43:2-5; Ezekiel 44:4; Haggai 2:7-9)
  4. Praise and honor (Joshua 7:19; 1 Samuel 6:5)
  5. God’s works and power (Exodus 29:43; 1 Chron. 16:24,28-29; Psalm 29:9; Psalm 84:11; Psalm 96:3)
  6. The tongue giving praise to God (Psalm 16:9; Psalm 21:5; Psalm 29:1-2; Psalm 30:12; Psalm 57:8; Psalm 62:7; Psalm 66:2; Psalm 96:7-8; Psalm 105:3; Psalm 108:1; Psalm 115:1; Isaiah 42:8,12; Isaiah 48:11; Jeremiah 13:16)
  7. Heaven and its splendor (Psalm 24:7-10; Psalm 29:3; Psalm 57:11; Psalm 73:24; Psalm 149:5)
  8. Honor to God (Psalm 79:9; Proverbs 25:2; Malachi 2:2)
  9. God’s kingdom and its splendor (Psalm 145:11; Isaiah 66:18-19; Ezekiel 39:21)
  10. Outward appearance (Exodus 28:2,40)
  11. God’s infinite light in which He dwells (Exodus 33:18-22; cp. 1 Tim. 6:16)
  12. Honor to men (Proverbs 3:35; Jeremiah 2:11)
  13. Men created for God’s honor (Isaiah 43:7; Isaiah 60:2; Isaiah 66:12)
  14. Man’s honor among men (Isaiah 8:7; Isaiah 16:14; Isaiah 17:4; Isaiah 21:16; Daniel 11:39)
There are twelve other Hebrew words and ten Greek words translated glory. When it is said that people  saw the glory of the Lord it refers to some visible manifestation of His person or His power (Exodus 16:7,10; Exodus 24:16-17). Moses requested to see the infinite glory in which God dwells, but this could not be fully granted (Exodus 33:18, note; 1 Tim. 6:16).

Four-fold Description of God’s Glory:

  1. A likeness as the appearance of fire
  2. The appearance of God from His loins downward was like fire
  3. The appearance from His loins upward was brightness, the color of amber
  4. The glory of the God of Israel according to the vision I saw in the plain (Ezekiel 8:4; see Ezekiel 1)
